Evolution Korea
For a long time, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so could give the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one example of how the concept of development has changed.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which may result in variations in genes or whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the development and emergence of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living organisms develop traits to improve their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. In time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial and claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology and helps scientists to understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also shows the connections between species. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world, and to make useful discoveries, such as developing new treatments.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains more about the universe and the life on this planet. It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to note that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs, since the theory deals only with things, events and processes in the physical world.
In fact, many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry that is shared with other animals.
It is essential that science educators stand up for the teaching evolution. In some countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.
It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing new drugs and other treatments, while others use it to improve animal and plants species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a profound faith in God and seek to know how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. While Creationists may not all be Christian however, many are. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most common type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the manner described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs are less well known, but they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.
Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this belief system, God creates the original species and then allows them to 에볼루션바카라 evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.
In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. This is a position that is backed by a variety of professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
